Edgar Degas - Grande arabesque (fonte entre 1922 et 1935) |
Considered by Renoir to be the greatest sculptor of his time, Edgar Degas created his sculptural work mostly for himself. The three-dimensional medium of sculpture allowed him best to experiment with the rendering of the form of his favourite subject, the ballerina, in many poses. He strived to capture the grace and beauty of these figures and explored the seemingly boundless flexibility of their bodies. The present sculpture, Grande Arabesque, third time, is one of his most expressive figural compositions. It shows the dancer executing an arabesque, the most beautifully poised and classically balanced of all ballet poses. In it the dancer positions herself so that she creates the longest possible line from her fingertips to her toes; her left leg extended backwards and at an oblique angle to the ground and her right arm extending forwards, counterbalancing her weight.
While other sculptures showing arabesque poses have counterparts in Degas' paintings, pastels and drawings, no other works show the present model, possibly because the pose in a stage composition would have required a male partner, a subject that Degas avoided.
